What is Acetaminophen?

Acetaminophen is a widely-used pain reliever and fever reducing ingredient that was first approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in the 1950s. It is commonly used as a treatment for headaches, muscle aches, other bodily aches, colds, fevers and more. Acetaminophen is made by McNeil Healthcare, which is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

Side Effects of Acetaminophen

While acetaminophen may be effective at relieving pain and reducing fevers, it has also been linked to severe, potentially life-threatening complications. Serious acetaminophen side effects may include:

  • Liver damage
  • Liver failure
  • Other acetaminophen side effects

Acetaminophen FDA Press Release

In January 2011, the Food & Drug Administration issued a press release requesting that acetaminophen drug manufacturers limit the amount of the ingredient to no more than 325 milligrams in each dose. In addition to lowering the limit of acetaminophen in prescription formulations, the FDA also began requiring manufacturers to include information regarding liver injuries on the labels of all combination prescription acetaminophen drugs.
